Raymond Duchamp-Villon
In this family of artists, Raymond Duchamp-Villon was born on November
5, 1876.
He studied medicine from 1894 to 1898 yet when illness kept him from his
studies,
he began his career as a sculptor. In 1902 he exhibited at the Societe
Nationale des
Beaux-Arts and in 1903 he settled in Neuilly-sur-Seine. In 1905 he had
a joint show with his brother, Jacques Villon and together they moved
to Puteaux two years later.
The Duchamp brothers, along with Jacques Villon
were instrumental in the Cubist movement in the early 1910’s. They
attended weekly meetings at the Puteaux Group and were successful in numerous
exhibitions from 1911 to 1915. In 1916 Raymond Duchamp
contracted typhoid fever and the disease ultimately resulted in his death
on
October 9, 1918.
